ABOUT MALLETT'S HOME HARDWARE

Mallett's Home Hardware is the largest independent hardware retailer in Cornwall, as is an iconic and much loved store, offering much more than just hardware.

Apart from the popular in-store Tea Shop, Tea On The Square, which is a favourite place for locals to meet, the store is arranged over 2 floors. We offer an exciting range of departments, including Cookshop, Domestic Appliances, Gifts, Housewares, Linens, Gardening and Tools. Mallett’s also boasts one of the most comprehensive Toy departments locally, and is a real destination department for kids and adults alike.

Quality, traditional value, and attentive service, characterise the difference between Mallett’s and other High Street stores. We are proud to be a lone store, not a clone store!

HISTORY

Prior to the acquisition by Home Hardware South West Limited in December 2004, the store had been in the ownership of the Mallett family for almost 125 years.

Priding itself on 'old fashioned' customer service the store has evolved into Truro's local department store with china, linens, glass and giftware amongst the latest additions.

In 1883, William Mallett, a local Cornishman, started trading at Trafalgar House in Fowey. Mallett's advertised in Deakin's Guide in 1892 describing themselves as 'general furnishing and agricultural ironmongers, saddles, ship chandlers, plumbers and tinplate workers'.

Bertram Mallett moved the business to Truro in 1897, his son Denzil Mallett joined the company in 1935 and Denzil's son Robert came into the business in 1965 and subsequently became Managing Director in 1972. Number 6 Victoria Square had been purchased in 1911 and in 1968 numbers 3 and 4 were sold and the existing stock was transferred (in wheelbarrows) to the newly refurbished number 6 which opened in January 1969. Number 7 was purchased in September 1987 and opened for business in January 1988. Mallett's have been trading on the site ever since.

In December 2004, Robert Mallett retired. The Mallett family sold their shares in Mallett & Son Limited to Home Hardware Southwest Limited, the UK's largest independent hardware buying group. Robert knew that Mallett's would be in safe hands.
